Areas of Concern
These are areas of concern as studied and credited by Laura Mize. Laura is a pediatric speech-language pathologist who specializes in treating young children, ages birth to three, with communication delays and disorders. She earned her M.S. degree from University of Southern Mississippi, and is the founder of “teachmetotalk.com.” We have quoted a few examples from her website here, but feel free to read more in depth on her site linked below!

This area refers to how a child uses the large muscles in his body like his legs, arms, and core. Some examles of gross motor skill concerns include but not limited to, only walking on their toes, not the soles of their feet, or frequently falling/tripping, for no apparent reason. Be sure to mention any concerns to your pediatrician to consider early intervention if needed!

This area refers to how a child uses the smaller muscles in his body such as his hands and fingers. Examples include, but not limited to, not banging objects together by 10 months of age, or not being able to move/open one hand/arm. Be sure to mention any concerns to your pediatrician in order to receive early intervention!

Cognitive skills include how a child thinks, learns, pays attention, plans, and remembers. Examples of cognition/problem solving skills include, but not limited to, unaware of changes in his/her environment and routine, or having difficulty problem solving during activities in comparison to his/her peers. Remember to mention any area of concern to your pediatrician for early intervention!

Sensory skills refer to how a child processes incoming sensory information - things he sees, hears, feels, and tastes. Examples include, but not limited to, showing poor or no eye contact, or having a hard time calming themselves down appropriately. Be sure to mention any concerns to your pediatrician for early intervention!

Self-care refers to how a child learns to take care of himself including eating, feeding, dressing, and toileting. Examples of concerns include, but not limited to, not feeding him/herself finger foods by 14 months of age, or having difficulty biting or chewing food during mealtime. Remember to mention any of your concerns to your pediatrician for early intervention!

This developmental area includes how a child learns to interact with others. Examples include, but not limited to, Not smiling by 4 months, or not demonstrating appropriate play with an object. Be sure to mention any concerns to your pediatrician for early intervention!
